EXPERTISE / STRATEGY

Strategy is the discipline of making choices when the future is uncertain.

I work on strategy as a system of choices: understanding context, deciding what matters, accepting trade-offs, and translating priorities into action.

THE LOGIC

What makes a strategy?

A strategy is a coherent set of choices about where to focus, how to compete or create value, and what not to pursue.

Without a choice, a list of goals is only an ambition. Without trade-offs, priorities remain unstable.

The work of strategy is to turn complexity and uncertainty into a small number of consequential decisions.

Five questions behind a strategic choice

Good strategy makes the important questions explicit before it prescribes action.

01

Where are we?

What context, constraints and forces shape the problem?

02

What matters?

Which objectives and sources of advantage deserve priority?

03

What will we choose?

Where will we focus, and what will we deliberately not do?

04

What must be true?

Which assumptions need evidence before commitment?

05

How will we act?

What sequence of actions turns strategic intent into results?

Strategy becomes real when choices have consequences.

Choosing one direction means giving up alternatives. Those trade-offs are not a side effect of strategy; they are part of its substance.

The goal is not to remove uncertainty. It is to make better choices despite it.

From context to action

A strategic process should make reasoning visible and create opportunities to learn before commitment becomes expensive.

01 Frame the problem
02 Read the context
03 Generate choices
04 Test assumptions
05 Set priorities
06 Act & learn

What should a strategy produce?

The output is not a long document. It is a clearer set of choices that can guide decisions.

Direction

A clear answer to where the organisation is going.

Choices

A small set of strategic choices and explicit non-choices.

Priorities

A sequence for allocating attention and resources.

Action

Concrete moves, owners and learning loops.
